CHAPTER TWELVE
Avery
The doorbell rang as I was standing in the kitchen waiting for my coffee to brew, bleary-eyed behind a pair of sunglasses. Because, apparently, weâd had more to drink than I thought we did, and I was older than I used to be, and it was all creating a big, epic, hangover.
Emilio didnât seem to be similarly suffering. Heâd actually gotten up like usual to go to the gym before coming home to shower and head out to work. The freak. All before I could even drag my dehydrated ass out of bed.
The only thing keeping me from being completely miserable were all the beautiful memories from the night before. Ones I was trying not to sully with things like my betrayal and what was going to happen once he found out the truth.
I toyed with the idea of, I donât know, sitting down and talking to him about it. Being open and honest. He would have to call in Lorenzo. There would be a meeting and questions.
I believed in the decency of the Costa men now that Iâd been in their world for a while.
But no matter their ability to accept me and this situation, it didnât change that it wouldnât help.
Because Renzo had a card up his sleeve. One I knew he wasnât opposed to using against me.
I shook those thoughts away as I made my way to the door, frowning when I saw a messenger standing there.
I was not in appropriate âopen the door to strangersâ attire, wearing one of Lorenzoâs button-ups, my sunglasses, and literally nothing else.
But if this was an important message or package for him, I couldnât exactly ignore it when I was home.
Sighing, I opened the door.
But instead of a greeting, something was shoved at me, and the man walked away before I got a chance to say or ask anything.
It wasnât until he looked back at me before heading away that I recognized him.
Shit.
Shitshitshitshit.
I rushed back inside, locking the door, and looking down at the envelope with shaky hands.
Stomach twisting so that nausea had no choice but to start rising up, I flipped it over, and pulled open the flap.
Reaching inside, I felt the glossy sides of what had to be pictures.
Oh, God.
Of what?
I wanted to throw them away without looking. To burn them in the fireplace. To shred them to a million pieces in Emilioâs office.
But I would be doing no one, least of all myself, a favor by avoiding this. There was no avoiding this. Renzo could and would find me whenever he wanted to. Heâd sent me here, after all.
Taking a steadying breath, I pulled out the pictures.
Just two of them.
The one on top was a familiar one, from a different angle than Iâd experienced it, though.
Drunk Emilio and myself, him pushing me against the door, his lips on mine, his arm holding up my knee so he could press against me, show me how much he wanted me.
Oh, God.
He knew.
He knew and there was no way he wasnât absolutely pissed.
